What to Do During an After-Hours Dental Emergency:
For Pain:
-
Rinse your mouth with warm salt water (1/2 teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces of warm water) to cleanse the area and reduce discomfort.
-
Take over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or acetaminophen (Tylenol), following dosage instructions. NEVER put aspirin directly on your gums or tooth, as it can burn the tissue.
-
Apply a cold compress or ice pack to the outside of your cheek or mouth in the affected area for 15-20 minutes at a time to reduce swelling and numb the pain.
For a Broken or Chipped Tooth:
-
Rinse your mouth with warm water to clean the area.
-
If there's bleeding, apply a piece of gauze to the area for about 10 minutes or until the bleeding stops.
-
Apply a cold compress to the outside of your mouth/cheek to reduce swelling and pain.
-
If you have the broken piece, save it and bring it to the dentist.
-
Avoid chewing on the affected side. You can use dental wax (available at pharmacies) or sugar-free gum to cover any sharp edges.
